Nigeria’s U-23 team head coach, Samson Siasia, has settled for Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi and South Africa-based goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, as his over-aged players for the forthcoming summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
According to source, the former Super Eagles handler opted for only two over-aged players instead of the mandatory three due to not willingness of foreign clubs to release their players for the competition kicks off next month in Brazil.
“Samson Siasia has submitted his 18-man list for this year’s Olympic football tournament in Rio, Brazil. He will be going to Rio with only two over-aged players – Mikel and Akpeyi,” the source said.
Mikel has been keen on featuring in this year’s Olympic football tournament after he missed out from the Beijing 2008.
Other over-aged players who made the provisional 35-man squad earlier released by Siasia were Turkey-based defender, Godfrey Oboabona and Watford of England striker, Odion Ighalo.
Mikel and Akpeyi are expected to lead the quest in August with the Chelsea man highly expected to provide leadership for the team both on and off the pitch.
Nigeria won gold at the 1966 Olympics in Atlanta, USA and finished second behind Argentina the Beijing 008 Olympics.
Meanwhile, Dream Team V1 midfielder, Oghenekaro Etebo has hit good form ahead of his trip to the United States to link up with his teammates by hit a brace for his newly promoted Portuguese side CD Feirense in their 6-0 thrashing of Tourizense in a pre-season game yesterday.
The former Warri Wolves midfielder who is expected to feature for Nigeria in the football event of the Rio Olympic Games scored the opening goal for his side in the 18th minute.
The 20-year-old who was the top scorer at the 2015 Africa U-23 Nations Cup in Senegal netted his second of the game in the 33rd minute.
The other scorers for Feirense are Tiago Silva, Paulo Monteiro, Platiny and Luis Aurelio.
Etebo’s international team mate, goalkeeper Dele Alampasu, also featured from the start and kept a clean sheet.
